Vale George William Dore OAM.

By Noelle Sullivan

George Dore died on 15th August aged 88. As a foundation member of Holy Family Parish, he will be remembered for his significant contribution to the establishment of our parish, building first our school, then the hall, presbytery, and finally the church in 1978. As a Member of the Master Builders’ Association and running his own business, he was involved in several other large buildings in the area and well known for his excellent work.

He and Margaret settled in Mount Waverley after their marriage in 1955, and were always active members of our community, especially during those early fundraising days when the parish was in its infancy. Their children, Lyn, Michael, Rosemaree (dec), John, Marianne and Marguerite, all attended Holy Family School. Both Michael and John followed their father’s footsteps into the building trade, and designed and built many homes within the Monash area.

George and Margaret retired to the Pakenham area on a larger property, and Margaret died some years ago. George was a local identity in Mount Waverley, and known for his ability to hold very long and lively conversations recalling memories from way back. He was an astute business man, and a friend to many.

In recent times he has been cared for by his family at home, and as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was dearly loved and will be missed very much.

Many parishioners will recall George with fond memories, and sadly due to Covid19 restrictions will not be able to attend his funeral, which is being held here, very fittingly, on Tuesday 25th August, commencing with Rosary at 11.30 am, followed by Mass.
